We tell ourselves that we are back in civilization, having left the other world behind. European countries (Morocco is not, of course, but it feels like a Muslim European country.). The streets are clean - no dust and little trash. Few if any visible troubled or unhoused. But then we realize that many of our home cities and highways could benefit from from men and women sweeping street and sidewalk debris or from timely emptying of public trash cans. And we remember the groups of men around Home Depot or major intersections hoping for work, and we remember secluded locations where piles of cardboard and plastic bags indicate that this will be someone’s home for the night. The whole trip reminds us how fortunate we are and yet how much remains to be done for others.
